Appreciation is a fundamental human need. We all want and need to feel valued, whether it be in our personal lives or our professional lives. It may be even more important in our professional lives, because let’s face it, most of us spend more time working than we do with our loved ones. We want to feel like that time is valued and appreciated, money aside.

A recent Career Builder.ca survey shows that 59% of Canadians polled are unhappy at work. Only 34% love their jobs and 7 out of 10 Canadians said they sometimes feel burnt out at their jobs. And although this is typically a temporary situation, a little recognition and encouragement can go a very long way. {500 employees polled online by Redshift Research}

It doesn’t take a genius to know, understand and appreciate that Employee Recognition is worth its weight in gold. The money that you put out comes back to you 10-fold in terms of employee satisfaction, employee retention and company performance.

Employee Recognition is the acknowledgement of a person or team's behaviour, efforts, performance, and/or accomplishments that are considered above and beyond normal expectations. Identifying what employees appreciate is a task unto itself. Not everyone is money driven. Some employees would prefer a day off to spend time with loved ones, while others may appreciate a night out at their favourite restaurant or a shopping spree at their favourite store or mall. Others may truly appreciate a token that can be displayed for others to see such as a glass or crystal award that states that they excel at their job. To be truly effective some time should be spent on considering the right form of recognition. But you can be assured that these little gestures speak volumes to the hard working individuals that make up a successful company or organization.
